Offshore Wind Energy
Offshore wind is now a growing source of
energy in Europe, and interest is on the rise in the US and in
New England. Some of the most significant wind resource in New
England is offshore, but this resource had not been well
characterized.
In 2000, RERL joined together with AWS Scientific and True
Wind Solutions, under the auspices of the Connecticut Clean Energy
Fund, the Massachusetts
Renewable Energy Trust and Northeast Utilities Service Company,
in a project to improve the assessment of the wind energy
resource offshore of Southern New England. The effort included
data collection, wind resource mapping and preliminary design
of future offshore met stations.
